I'm doing a quick posting before we board the Hurtigruten ferry this evening for the sailing down to Trondheim, where we arrive at 6am on Sunday morning.
The others have told me that, on the ferry sailing they did from Honningsvag to Tromso, there was limited internet access, so this may well be the last posting I am able to do until Sunday evening when, with a bit of luck, we should arrive in the small Norwegian town of Stryn.
The weather here has changed for the good and it is beautifully sunny. What a change from the past week or so, when we have had more or less continuous cloud and intermittent rain. Svolvaer and the surrounding countryside look so much better in the sun!
We decided to join Bob & Thelma on a visit to the Museum of Lofoten and the aquarium at Storvagan. The museum consists of old fishermen's houses (rorbuer), a main house, boat houses and workshops. Everything has been wonderfully restored and the museum gave us a very good insight into the lives of the Lofoten islanders in the 19th century.
The main building, a white painted wooden house, has a beautifully restored interior.
The machine shop with a multitude of ancient engines and tools.
On the left, one of the Rorbuer and, next to it, a boat house. Below, one of the restored 19th century boats.
The interior of one of the Rorbuer. The fishermen lived in very cramped sleeping quarters, where between eight and twelve slept two to a bed.
The aquarium and one of the seals in the outside tank.
With the sun shining, the surrounding mountains looked magnificent.
We drove back to our hotel to complete our packing and went into the town to have lunch at one of the harbour bars. Bob and Thelma joined us.
One of the wooden fishing boats moored in the harbour.
The centre of Svolvaer.
We board the ferry this evening at 7pm. We will both be sad to leave the Lofoten Islands and I am really pleased we decided to stay here for three nights.
